10. Watchmen The Complete Motion Comic DVD Review - IGN

  • Feb 20, 2009 · But to say that Watchmen is a murder mystery about superheroes would be like saying Moby Dick is an adventure story about a man chasing a whale.

  • Unless you've been seriously out of touch with popular culture over the last year or so, you're well aware that the live-action adaptation of the celebrated graphic novel Watchmen -- co-created by writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons -- is soon to hit theaters. In a blatant attempt capitalize on that theatrical release, Warner Bros. released a collection of 12 webisodes (corresponding to the 12 original chapters of the series) last year to get audiences up to speed before they see the film. I suppose merely suggesting they read the source material would have been too obvious. Originally offered for free through iTunes (and still available for $1.99 per episode), Watchmen The Complete Motion Comic is now being sold in its entirety as a two-disc DVD release.

  • If you're reading this review, I'm going to assume you already have familiarity with the book. If not, all you need to know is that "Watchmen" is a great deconstruction of the superhero myth. Set in an alternate 1985 - where Richard Nixon is still president and costumed crime fighters have largely been outlawed - the book explores the idea that anyone who would dress up in a silly outfit to fight crime must have a screw loose somewhere. The characters, while technically heroic, come with their share of personality defects, raging from egotism to insecurity to outright psychopathy. At every turn, "Watchmen" goes against the grain of what you'd expect in a superhero comic, right up to the shocking ending.
